Some places you visit…
and some places you never forget.
For me, Mont Saint-Michel is one of those unforgettable places.
I had the opportunity to visit back in 1997, and what stands out most isn’t just how beautiful it is—it’s how alive it feels.
🚶‍♀️ A Walk That Disappeared
We started our day walking across the beach to reach the island.
It felt surreal—this massive medieval abbey rising out of the sand, almost like a mirage.
But the most incredible part?
By late afternoon, the tide started rolling in.
Instead of rushing out, we found a seat at a small café, ordered a cocktail, and just… watched.
🌊 The water slowly crept in, covering the exact path we had walked that morning.
🌅 The sun began to set behind the abbey, casting the whole island in this golden glow.
What had been a wide, walkable beach just hours earlier transformed into open water right before our eyes.
By the time we were ready to leave, there was no beach left at all.
We had to take a bus back over the bridge—because the ocean had completely taken it back.
🏰 A Living Abbey (Then and Now)
When I visited, it was still a working monastery—and we were actually able to go inside and see monks.
At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate how special that was.
What’s amazing is… it still is today.
Mont Saint-Michel is not just a historic site—it’s still a living religious space. A small community of monks and nuns continue to live there, carrying on centuries of tradition.
While it’s more structured now due to the number of visitors, you can still experience this side of the abbey by attending a service or quiet moment of prayer.
There’s something incredibly powerful about knowing that in the middle of all the tourism… that sense of peace and purpose still exists.

The island after hours is quieter, more intimate, and absolutely worth it.
