If you’re planning a trip to French Polynesia, one of the most common questions travelers ask is: Should I visit Moorea or Bora Bora?
The good news is that you really can’t go wrong. Both islands are stunning, but they offer very different experiences.
Bryan and I visited both islands on our honeymoon, and each one had its own unique personality.
🌴 Moorea: Adventure and Lush Mountains
Moorea sits just about 10 miles from Tahiti, but it feels like a completely different world. The island is known for its dramatic volcanic mountains, lush green valleys, and beautiful bays.
Moorea is a great choice if you enjoy:
• ATV tours through the mountains
• hiking and scenic lookouts
• snorkeling in calm lagoons
• visiting pineapple farms and local shops
• a slightly more laid-back island vibe
One of our favorite experiences was riding ATVs to the Belvedere Lookout, where you can see both Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay from the same viewpoint.
Moorea feels a little more authentic and adventurous, while still offering incredible luxury resorts like the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa.
💎 Bora Bora: Iconic Lagoon and Luxury
Bora Bora is often considered the crown jewel of French Polynesia, and once you see the lagoon, it’s easy to understand why.
The island is famous for its unbelievable shades of turquoise water and luxury overwater bungalows.
Bora Bora is perfect if you’re looking for:
• overwater bungalow experiences
• lagoon tours and snorkeling
• jet skiing around the island
• sunset cruises
• luxury resort relaxation
During our stay at The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort, it often felt like we had the entire lagoon to ourselves.
Flying into Bora Bora alone is worth the trip — the view from the plane is absolutely breathtaking.
✈️ My Recommendation
If possible, visit both islands.
Moorea offers adventure, mountains, and local culture, while Bora Bora delivers the iconic lagoon views and luxury resort experience.
The two islands complement each other beautifully, and experiencing both gives you the best of French Polynesia.
Bryan and I spent three nights in Moorea and three nights in Bora Bora, which ended up being the perfect balance.
🌺 Travel Tip
If you plan to visit both islands, start in Moorea and finish in Bora Bora. Bora Bora has such a dramatic “wow factor” that it makes the perfect grand finale to a French Polynesia trip.
